First community session of the New Year today, so we took a walk-about to see how the plot was growing and what’s new. Our Garlic, Red Onions and Winter Broad Beans are all sending up fresh green shoots and looking very healthy, great to see the new growth! We also put in Winter cabbages, under a fleece tunnel but they have been munched on quite badly by slugs so are not looking too good, we put some slug pellets down (as they are under the fleece this will keep birds away) and hope they will make a come-back!
The sun was out and we took a stroll around the allotments, only to find a huge pile of fly tipped rubbish at the Wellington Road end of the site. This is where there are also lots of alcohol cans and bottles strewn around from street drinkers. We also found overflowing bins on nearby streets and in one case a bin missing, leaving rubbish exposed.
Good job that we are just about to run a Community Litter Pick to get together with friends, neighbours, partners and local agencies to improve the local environment. We have already got people signed up to take part and if you want to get involved you can contact us via the phone and email details on this website. Or just turn up on Wed 30th January at the Pavillion, Livingstone Road entrance to the Allotments at 10am and join us (ends at 1pm, stay as long or a little as you like). More details to follow!
